In Haiti, many children and young people are growing up in a reality that forces them to become strong far too soon. Gang violence, kidnappings, displacement, loss, fear, school closures and insecurity have become part of their daily lives. Some see, hear or experience things no child should ever have to endure, yet they continue carrying those wounds in silence.
At the same time, many young people and parents do not receive enough information to understand mental health, recognize signs of trauma or know where to seek help. At the very moment this support is needed most, professional services and safe spaces remain far too limited.
This is why Fondasyon Ranfò wants to act. We want to create spaces where children and young people can speak without judgment, put words to what they are experiencing, understand their emotions, learn to express themselves and receive appropriate guidance and professional support when needed. We also want to work with parents and schools, because no child should have to carry this burden alone.
At Ranfò, caring for a child means seeing the whole person. As we help children and young people access education, school supplies and activities that help them learn, develop and regain hope, and as we support parents and families, we remain attentive to what children are carrying inside. We do not only want to help a child enter a classroom; we want to help that child enter with a mind strong enough to learn, dream and keep moving forward. That is why educational support, family support and emotional support must work together.
Today’s children are Haiti’s future. If we neglect their mental health, we risk allowing today’s trauma to determine the country’s future. But if we help them regain their strength, protect their hope and gain the tools they need to grow, we will help build a stronger generation—and through them, a country with a greater chance to rise again.
